"Tron" is an interesting franchise. While it's a big-budget science fiction franchise that Disney seems to be rolling out now once a decade or so, the films have never been huge money-makers on their own. The first film, "Tron," took in $50 million against a $17 million production budget and 2010's "Tron: Legacy" made $410 million against a $170 million budget. When you consider money spent outside production, including marketing, "Tron" films historically do not bad but not great.

Disney's official synopsis of the film reads, "'Tron: Ares' follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind's first encounter with AI beings."

In other words, "Tron: Ares" turns the usual "Tron" formula on its head. Rather than putting real people into the digital world of a video game, "Tron: Ares" takes the digital AI out of the game world and lets them run amok in the real one.
